I took on the role of Group Leader after covid restrictions were lifted. We now have a friendly group  who love reading about history across all the centuries.

Each month we read the allocated book and then have a lively discussion about our last read on the first Friday of the month.  We meet in my home in Weston super Mare which provides a library like atmosphere and we keep it to a maximum of ten people. We are currently up to maximum numbers but some members move on and we would then welcome new ones.

The discussions are lively and informative and often various different opinions are aired.  The Club is run with the ethos that whatever your opinion is, it matters.

We have read a varied selection of books this year covering different periods in history.

  • The Duke by David Churchill (William the Conqueror) was only really enjoyed by one member.
  • Brunel The Man who built the World.  What a fascinating read not only the man himself was a brilliant engineer but so was his father and his son - something none of us knew.
  • Erebus by Michael Palin, adventures in the Artic and Antarctic discovering unexplored regions.  This was given an average score of 9 out of ten by all members
  • Mauve by Simon Garfield. Sir William Perkin, a brilliant chemist who not only patented and discover this colour but contributed a great deal to industry and medicine through this entire life.  In fact dyes used in medicine today are from his discovery in 1850s.

Every book we read we discuss whether we have enjoyed it or not. We are always learning new and fascinating facts about different characters and events from history.
