Weston-super-Mare

January Walk

Our first walk of the year was at the end of January we did a walk along Brean and Berrow beach which took us around the Church at Berrow and then a visit to the ship wreck on the beach.

During March 1897 very high winds found many ships in distress and among them was the Norwegian barque
the SS Nornen which had tried to find shelter in the lee of Lundy Roads but with her anchors dragging she was
driven on to the Berrow mudflats. Thanks to the aid of the Burnham lifeboat everybody and literally the dog were saved but the sea pounded the ship and it could not be saved. the ship now lies just North of St.Mary's parish church at Berrow and the remaining skeleton can be seen at low tide.
