Hazel Moss from Bristol U3A will visit us again and take us to the small village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast introducing us to the Staithes Group of artists who at the turn of the 20th Century gathered in this small village and each in their own personal style documented the life and landscape…

We shall explore the way the Spanish Civil War mobilised a generation of artists and intellectuals and examine how the non-interventionist policies of both Britain and Europe compelled them to raise awareness of this bloody conflict.

We will look at works from a very long time ago and for contrast the art of German expressionist August Macke.

Our focus will be Tristram Hillier (1905-1983) He was an inveterate traveller going all over the world finally settling and making his home in Somerset. A sensitive child he had a difficult upbringing which is reflected in his art which is crisp, precise and dreamlike with an unsettling atmosphere

Our now longtime friend Jan Cox is with us again and will talk with us about this American artist. He was the most successful artist in America before his untimely death in 1925 at only 42. In 2011 the National Gallery in London staged a major exhibition.

We explore the life and work of this Italian woman artist whose art reflects the work of her acclaimed if scandalous compatriot

French born artist Rosa Bonheur lived a very unconventional and interesting life. She became one of the most celebrated artists of the day for her portrayal of various types of animals and rural life.
