Each month we read the allocated book and then have a lively discussion about our last read on the first Friday of the month.  

The discussions are lively and informative and various different opinions are aired.  We discuss whether we have enjoyed it or not and score it out of ten. We are always learning new and fascinating facts about different characters and events from history.

The Club is run with the ethos that whatever your opinion is, it matters and everyone has an equal part to play.

We read a wide variety of books, some non-fiction and some fiction but based on historical events. The following are examples of some of the books we have read this year.

• The Duke by David Churchill (William the Conqueror) was only really enjoyed by one member.
• Brunel The Man who built the World.  What a fascinating read not only the man himself was a brilliant engineer but so was his father and his son - something none of us knew.
• Erebus by Michael Palin, adventures in the Artic and Antarctic discovering unexplored regions.  This was given an average score of 9 out of ten by all members.
• The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman. Following the life of Richard the Third. One member described this book as ‘a thriller, a love story and a tragedy’. There was divide opinion between those who loved it and others not so much, but it was agreed that it was well researched.

We are between venues at present, hoping to finalise our venue at our August meeting. Until then we are not accepting new members but will keep a waiting list as we do have three vacancies.
